Happy Birthday Starman

Creating FANTASTIC music right till the end. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song. Bowie's music has been the sound track of my life. Feeling sad he's gone but SO happy he lived to share his art with us.

The Srokes - Oblivius

I LOVE this new tune from The Strokes. The bonkers vocal, the shouty bit and the weird broken microphone thing that's going on. A great song to start your Monday with : )

Flaming Lips - Do you realise?

I went to a funeral yesterday. If a funeral can be good without being disrespectful, it was an excellent one. It was a celebration of someones life with lots of laughter, joy, reunions and reflection. It reminded us to live, love and enjoy our short lives as much as we can. For me this song puts that reminder beautifully...

I wish I could dance like this...

On 6 Music today Lauren Laverne was talking about Billy Preston's amazing dancing.  I looked him up on Youtube and wow yes what an amazing dancer - love his yellow suit too...

My new favourite band - The Foals

Artwork by Tinhead

I love the energy of the Oxford band The Foals. Yannis Philippakis vocals are haunting yet melodic and a little bit shouty. Their tunes are catchy but the best bit for me is how their songs build to a crescendo. They always have fab artwork for their promo. too : ) Stick this on loud and dance round the room.

Soak - Sea Creatures

It's so lovely and sunny in Milton Keynes today. This song would be perfect to listen to whilst sipping a Malibu in a deckchair. Soak is the Bridie Monds-Watson a 17-year-old singer-songwriter from Derry. She has the sweetest voice I think I have ever heard.

With a Little Help from My Friends...

At the moment we are learning this song at Choir. We are doing the Joe Cocker version not the Beatles Ringo rendition. It sounds so great even if I say so myself. We have a concert coming up here if you are local and want to come along. Book your tickets soon though we ALWAYS sell out (family and friends mainly lol!). RIP Joe Cocker, I hope we sing a fitting tribute to you at our BIG gig...

Fairytail of New York - The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

We are learning this at choir at the mo. It's great fun full of love and hate plus it''s a classic Christmas song. I love singing the "You scumbag you maggot" bit which should go down well tomorrow when we sing for the lights switch on in Leighton Buzzard : )

One of these days...

We went and saw Gaz Combes (ex frontman of Supergrass) last night in  a teeny tiny venue in Milton Keynes. Must have only been 200 people there. He crafts songs brilliantly, plays piano, guitar and drums. What a talent and what a great night.

Running up the hill...

photo
From notebook doodles

From left: Emma, Pippa and me

And I did have to run up the hill to the Kate Bush Before the Dawn concert. HORRENDOUS train delays meant I was dashing across London to the Hammersmith Apollo in a frantic fashion. I made it, sweaty and pink but I got there. She was amazing, the show was fabulous, full of creativity and innovation. Fish skeleton masks, boats, seas, feathers, poems written on ticker tape, great lighting from start to finish and of course great music with Kates still wonderful voice. It wasn't a greatest hits gig, it was part concert and part theatre but she sang two of my favourites which made me cry happy tears. I have NEVER been to a concert where the audience has been so behind an artist from the very beginning. Most artists have to warm us up, earn our praise and applause. Not Kate, her work was done, 35 years of being the sound track to the ups and downs of our lives. It's her last concert at the Apollo today maybe her last live concert ever but I got a golden ticket and in a small way feel part of rock history.

First Aid Kit

I'm not normally a big fan of folk music (I'm more of a rock chic) but I LOVE First Aid kit. The sound that Sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg make is so perfect, beautiful and so in harmony it makes me stop for a moment and just wonder what it would be like to be able to sing like that.

Armchair Glastonbury 2014

Arcade Fire looked fab. at Glastonbury this year. They and their shows are such a creative force (take a look at Régine Chassagne reflektor dress in this video - stunning). It would  have been fabulous to  have trotten the muddy path to Glasto but the good old BBC did us proud with tons of coverage on three channels. You don't get the same atmosphere I know but and you can stay warm and dry sitting on a comfy sofa.
