Storage in colour order

There was a thread on Instagram recently about how folk stored their stuff in colour order. I do that too. Not for everything but for a few thing. I reckon some chaos helps creativity but in some things I find it really helps to be organised.You can check my Instagram out here.

A very sunny Luton Carnival 2017

Thankfully The Luton Carnival was a very peaceful event, people for all religions and cultures celebrating together, the costumes were inspiring and the music loud - brilliant! Nice to visit my old stomping ground too as I grew up in Luton. It felt very nostalgic to be back in such a familiar place. : )

I've been experimenting with a bit of mixed media stitching. I have to admit I'm not sure about it. I normally like clean blocks of colour (I think this is a bit grey) but I have enjoyed trying something different and will defo do more and develop the idea : )

Sewing...

Have you been watching the The Great British Sewing Bee? I have and it has inspired me to get sewing again. Dawn over at Pop-i-cok was only saying last week that she used to sew loads, I used to too. I didn't fall out of love with it because of a terrible experience like Dawn (so sorry to hear about what happened Dawn - terrible for you) but I just kinda lost my sewing mojo. I had a fab time getting fabrics out and have been fiddling about. Such fun!

Tilleke Schwarz

I met Tilleke Schwarz last week at Ali Pali Knitting and Stitching show last weekend. I have to admit I was star struck. When she spoke to me I just said "love your work". How embarrassing. I went to a wonderful talk by Amanda (Mandy) Clayton last night. She shared her current work and plans and took us through her life of stitching which started as a very small child. Her work revels in textiles that are used, wonderfully tactile, deconstructed, worn, frayed and pre-loved. Amanda is passionate about maintaining the joy of holding a needle. Childhood experiences with stitch and cloth evolved as Amanda gained a First Class Degree in Embroidery in 1982. She is an artist who is gregarious, generous with her time and dedicated to sharing knowledge. If you get a chance to see Amanda's work or to hear her speak you MUST go, I came away from the talk inspired and NEEDING to get my sewing out.

Naomi Ryder

I love Naomi Ryder's work and was lucky enough to see some in the flesh a couple of weeks ago at Bucks County Museum. They have an exhibition on at the mo called "Stitched into Life" which runs until 29th June and features Naomi's delightful, beautiful and humorous work. Her work is so free and uninhibited, I can only dream to be able to work like that AND she does it all in stitches!

It's a bit of an embroidery fest at the museum as there is another exhibition running in tandem to Naomi's called "Splendid Stitches & Exotic Embroidery", this runs until 6th July. Sumptuous embroideries and textiles have been selected from rarely seen treasures from three collections: the Embroiderers’ Guild, the County Museum’s Buckinghamshire collections and a rare 17th century group in the care of the National Trust at Claydon House. Featuring Indian inspirations, gorgeous garments and textile treasures from past and present including contemporary work by local embroidery groups. It's free to get into both exhibitions. Snow in the park

So it was more "Snow in the Park" than "Vintage in the Park" but I managed to get there and folk came to see our stalls in snow boots and wrapped up for the arctic - IN MARCH - ONE WEEK TO EASTER! Anyway, it was a nice day (a little quiet due to the weather) and I met some lovely people. Above are some pics of my stall and some of the little characters I made especially for the fair. Hemmed in

Our local Art Gallery has a great textile exhibition on called Hemmed In: Embroidery and Needlework from MK and Beyond. It presents work from the 1930s to the present by over fifty practitioners and is organised with MK Embroiderers Guild and Jamie Chalmers, otherwise known as Mr X Stitch. Ranging from the local to the international, the exhibits include needlework through unusual media, techniques and unexpected subject matter, including street art, rock music and internet spam.

I took part in the MK Embroiderers Guild (MKEG) part of the exhibtion (see my work above) which challenged their members to represent ‘Milton Keynes in an eight-inch square’, to create small, needle and thread portraits of their favourite places in the city. The results constitute a real celebration of the city in stitch. In addition to work by the members, the exhibition includes a number of rare and significant pieces on loan from national collections, including such luminaries from the embroidery world as Rebecca Crompton, Rachael Thompson, Julia Caprara and Beryl Dean.

The exhibition at MK Gallery runs from 7 December 2012 – 6 January 2013, and admission is free.

UFO's

Unfinished Objects! Do you have any unfinished sewing and craft projects? I do and it seems so do loads of other people. This is why "The Unfinishable" project was started by Hazel Connors and Felicity Clarke. We saw it at The Knitting and Stitching show, a splendid tent decorated inside and out with all sorts of unfinishable projects, patchwork, embroidery, knitting, lace making etc.... Every piece has a story of why it was started and why it remains unfinished. Felicity and Hazel explore the realm of the almost-right, the heroic failures as assessed by the makers themselves. Other eyes may not be able to see any problem with the work or may see solutions to its resolution but it is the maker’s views alone which they are interested in. I loved the fact that the creativity and enthusiasm of starting to make something is celebrated and acknowledged. Seeing the pieces patched together made a very beautiful sight and showed the projects didn't really need to be finished to be enjoyed. I'll try and remember that when my pile of "stuff to do" falls over next time. For more info see the link here
