78 Derngate

Wow, what a place. I have been meaning to go there for ages and I finally made it last week to see the interior of 78 Derngate designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I saw the TV series showing the renovations and was so excited to see the great mans work for real. For such a humble terraced house, it's a stunning patchwork of pattern and design. There is also a lovely gallery and supporting museum next door and a shop and cafe. Walking round the house is very moving as you learn about Rennie Mackintosh and the Bassett-Lowkes who commissioned the refurbishment. Rennie Mackintosh was so ahead of his time but died in poverty having been largely unrecognised for his work. A sad story but a very great house that has been lovingly been brought back to life and is a great tribute. For more info visit the website here.
