La Compagnie Carabosse

We are enjoying the Milton Keynes International Festival (IF) at the moment and looooved the Fire Gardens or La Compagnie Carabosse. The company are French fire alchemists who lit up the night sky in the beautiful setting of Campbell Park in Central Milton Keynes. Dramatic fire, flames, music and sound were created and you are invited to wander through avenues, explore labyrinths and experience specially created fire gardens. Surprisingly, there wasn't a whiff of health and safety, very refreshing and our kids loved being up really late too.

School hols start NOW!

Both my kids are moving schools this year (my daughter goes to Secondary school and my son to Junior school), so it's been a very emotional couple of weeks of leavers parties, concerts, sports days and pressie buying for teachers. Looks like it's gonna be sunny for the first bit of their hols though - hurrah!

Meet my amazing Mum and her friends

My Mum, Sheila Baker (at the top of the picture) and her friends from the Daventry Townswomen's Guild have been knitting and crocheting blankets to help some of the world’s poorest people. The guild made 24 colourful blankets which have been sent to to the Addis Ababa Hospital in Ethiopia. It has been running since 1974 and is designed to help women who have suffered injuries while giving birth to children. The hospital treats around 25 women a week with childbirth injuries and they do a tremendous amount of work. The women who go to this hospital travel great distances. You will get women from Kenya, Sudan and Somalia – and often on foot. They arrive with nothing except the clothes they are wearing, so the blankets are used to keep them warm at night, when the temperatures drop rapidly and, when they return home, they take their blankets with them.

We lost

photoFor the last two weeks I have been consumed by trying to save our local swimming pool. Tonight planning was granted to demolish a perfectly good pool in favour of ANOTHER supermarket. I am gutted :  (  If anyone out there knows anyone or knows anything we could do to save this pool at the 11th hour please contact me. It is appalling that a perfectly good asset should just be bulldozed. See here for the history of the fight.

A surprisingly good night out

I went to a barn this evening. The barn was properly in the countryside with cows and tractors all around. Inside the the barn was a pop up Vintage and Handmade market and fashion show, decorated beautifully with bunting, caravans and other shabby chic stuff. I hadn't expected to be sitting in a barn (my friend just said she'd pick me up and that we were going to a charity doo) but the combination of a bit of retail, a good cause, a chance to natter and an enormous slab of homemade chocolate cake made me very happy :  )
